Meet Belinda and Axle the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, aged 6 years
About the breed
Originating from the Staffordshire region in England, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was bred from crosses between Bulldogs and various other terrier breeds for the once popular sport of bull baiting. Since then, interest in the breed stems around them being considered a good family pet.
Very strong and muscular for their size, the ‘staffy’ is a highly energetic and enthusiastic breed, known for doing everything full throttle! They are extremely affectionate and can be very obedient if well trained.
Why did you choose this particular breed?
Because of their loyalty to their owner/family, they are affectionate and the unconditional love that they constantly give you is so special. Their gorgeous eyes just melt your heart… which makes them get everything they want. LOL
Is their personality/behaviour in line with what people may associate with the breed?
Unfortunately we only ever see negative news about the Staffy and they are often looked at in a negative and aggressive way, when actually they are ‘totally the opposite’. With their high intelligence to learn things so quickly, if in the wrong hands of an irresponsible dog owner, they will unfortunately learn what they are taught. I truly believe that dogs are a reflection of their owner.
Any Tips for someone considering getting this breed?
If you want a pooch constantly by your side, loves human attention, pats/cuddles, sits on your lap, on your bed, watching you eat, wants to play and be with you every second of the day, then this is the Perfect Breed. They become part of the Family!
I can’t speak highly enough about taking your Staffy to obedience school It’s never too late to teach them and yourself! .It’s not just for your Pooch, but for the owner as well. You learn to earn each other’s trust and how to communicate correctly. This also helps you when it comes to teaching them tricks in a correct manner and teaching them good habits around the home.
How interested/good at training or obedience?
Staffies are extremely intelligent and will learn very, very quickly. They absolutely love human interaction with their owner. This keeps them happy and healthy.
Any tricks, skills or community work?
