Meet Cheddar the Border Collie

Meet Cheddar the Border Collie and his owner Casey!

Age: 9 months old.

Cheddar the Border CollieAbout the Breed

Cheddar is a Border Collie. They originated in the United Kingdom and were bred as a working dog breed to herd livestock, specifically sheep. Border Collies are known to stare, which is typically how they would control their flock. This does come off differently when communicating to other dogs though.

Why did you choose this particular breed?

I wanted a German Shepherd, my mother wanted a Cavalier K.C. Spaniel, so the middle line was a Border Collie; essentially a medium sized dog. I was always drawn into working dog breeds and wanted to be certain the dog I owned would be fit and healthy.

Is their personality/behaviour in line with what people associated with the breed?

I believe for Cheddar it is. Definitely a super active pup that is smart and loyal. But I do know there are Border Collies that love cuddles and prefer to nap on the couch. In saying that, I don’t believe their active level is as extreme as others come to think.

Any tips for someone considering getting this breed?

Baby proof the entire house and yard. Border Collies are opportunistic and practically a vacuum. They will eat anything and everything. In addition, these vacuums shed immensely. If you aren’t ready for a dog that will jump all the time and need training to walk nicely, this is not the breed for you.

How interested/good at training or obedience?

Cheddar is very good at training. He responds very well and is very food driven. He is extremely eager to please and a quick learner.

Any tricks, community work?Cheddar the Border Collie

Currently, I prefer to only have Cheddar have the basics 100% down pat. I was told and believe you should have a dog trained to live comfortably with you and do what you would like them to do. Any additional tricks Cheddar has picked up are typically accidentally introduced. In the future, I would like to continue his training as a therapy pet. Flyball, agility and obedience are also on our agenda.
