Reduce stress in puppies

stress in puppies

As both a Veterinarian and pet owner, I understand how important it is to reduce stress in puppies, especially when it comes to vet visits.

Given with all the learning and new experiences puppies face, we need to be aware that emotions and stress can actually affect gut health by disrupting the balance of bacteria.

Particularly, for puppies whose gut microbiome is still working itself out and is therefore more sensitive to external stressors.

Role of gut health to reduce stress in puppies

Just like in humans, we are now starting to understand the vital role of the gut-brain axis and how stress on the body can lead to digestive issues and even immune system problems.

That’s why I generally recommend the use of a quality gut health supplement to reduce stress in puppies, continuing up to 15 months of age or beyond particular if there has been a history of gut issues.

How supplements can reduce stress in puppies

Studies have shown that certain gut health supplements can help reduce the severity of gastrointestinal issues caused by stress, such as diarrhea and vomiting.

Additionally, a healthy gut microbiome has been linked to a stronger immune system, which can help puppies’ bodies better cope with immunisations and surgery.

Plus, to reduce stress in puppies starting them on a gut health and inflammation management program early in life can create the building blocks for good digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall health as an adult dog.

The EAC Inside Out Treatment Support is a postbiotic formula, containing not only pre & pro biotics, but important digestive enzymes, active plant extracts, minerals and other immune balancing ingredients to help improve gut health in dogs, cats, and other pets, with the aim of supporting your puppy during times of stress.

Reduce stress in puppies during Vet Visits

Now, we’ve mentioned vet visits and stress a lot here, but visits to us don’t need to be stressful and in fact we’d prefer they’re not! Here’s a few things we can all do to keep things happy.

Firstly, dogs are acutely aware of our emotions, so it’s essential to stay calm and composed before and during vet visits to ensuring you aren’t reinforcing your dog’s anxiety.

To reduce stress in puppies you want to create a positive association with your Vet clinic by taking along treats and toys and visit the clinic’s friendly reception staff outside of appointments for short, positive experiences.

Practise handling at home to reduce stress in puppies

At home, get your puppy used to formal clinical handling by touching them all over, handling their paws and inspecting their ears, teeth and eyes. It’s a good time to start brushing their teeth daily as well, so it becomes second nature to you both!

Use calming aids like an Adaptil pheromone collar or spray and always reward calm and relaxed behaviour with praise and treats.

Setting your puppy up for success in terms of both Vet visits and good gut health will help to reduce stress in puppies and create a confident, happy and healthy adult dog
